SILENT VALLEY PARK – Kerala

Silent Valley Park is nestled along the Nilgiri Hills in the Palakkad district of Kerala. It is spread over an area of about 90 sq km.

About the park
The actual name of the park is Indira Gandhi National Park. It is named after Srimati Indira Gandhi, ex Prime Minister of India. Silent Valley is the name of the valley where the park is located. It was established in the year 1980.

Flora
Wild durian, Palai, Indian rose chestnut, Kaatu jathikai, orchids, etc are endemic flora species of the park.

Fauna
Tiger, ruddy mongoose, leopard, elephant, barking deer, flying squirrel, gaur, panther, clawless otter, etc. are prominent fauna species of the region.

Avian Fauna
Indira Gandhi National Park is home to Black bulbul, Great Indian Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, Nilgiri Blue Robin, Red winged crested cuckoo, Black-and-orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri pipit and so on.

Tourist information
A guest house-cum-dormitory, maintained by the Forest Department, is available for accommodation at Mukkali. More lodging facilities are available at Mannarkkad, Malleeshwaram, Agali and Varagampadi Village.
Mukkali is the prime entry point to Silent Valley Park. Entry permit for entering the park can be obtained from the Forest Department office at Mukkali. The visitors have to evacuate the park by 5:00 pm. Staying overnight, camping and trekking, without special permission, is not allowed inside the park.
Tourists are not be allowed to venture inside the park without a guide. Blood sucking leeches are the main problem in the park. So always remember to carry table-salt packets or dry dokta leaves to remove leeches that stick to the body.

Getting there
Coimbatore (about 55 km away) in Tamil Nadu and Palakkad in Kerala are the closest airports. Regular bus services are available from these two places to the park. Nearest airport is at Coimbatore. The nearby bus terminal is at Mannarkkad (about 40 km away).
