SINGALILA NATIONAL PARK - West Bengal

Nestled at the higher elevation of Darjeeling Himalayas, (almost 2400 m to 3650m above sea level), Singalila National Park is the highest national park in West Bengal. The park is spread over an area of about 78.60sq km.

About the park
The park is located in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. In 1986 it was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary. It was deemed a national park in 1992.

Flora
The flora world of the park comprises of Silver Fir, Oak, Rhododendron, Pine Hemlock, Juniper, Mailing Bamboo, Magnolia, alpine and orchids. Himalayan Cobra Lilies are found abundantly in the region. Hence, the park is also popularly referred to as the "mountain of poisonous plants".

Fauna
The park is particularly popular for Himalayan Black Bears and Red Pandas. It is also home to different rare fauna species such as barking deer, leopard, clouded leopard, tigers, wild boar, pika, etc.

Avian fauna
Rufous-vented Tit, Scarlet Minivet, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Blood Pheasant, Old World babblers, Fulvous Parrotbills, etc. are prominent birds of the sanctuary.

Tourist information
Tumling and Rimbik are the two entry point to Singalila National Park and can be best accessed from Manebhanjan.
Sailung Tea House at Meghma is available for accommodation with prior booking. Other trekkers' huts and guest houses, mainatained by the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, are available at Tonglu, Sandakphu, Kala Pokhri and Manebhanjan.
Permission from the Forest Department is required for entering the park. Bird watching, natural trail, camping and trekking are the popular tourist activities inside the park. The important trekking routes inside the sanctuary are Sandakphu to Phalut; and Manebhanjan to Meghma; Meghma to Gairibas.

Getting there
Bagdogra International Airport (almost 13 km) is the closest aerodrome to the park. Nearest narrow gauge railhead is at Ghum and the nearest standard gauge railhead New Jalpaiguri. Nearby bus terminals are at Manebhanjan and Darjeeling. NH-31A passes through Darjeeling.
