SITA MATA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary is located towards the south-east of Pratapgarh district in Rajasthan along the foothills of the Aravalli ranges. It is located about 108 km away from the Udaipur city and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1979. The sanctuary is so named because as per the Hindu mythology it is believed that Goddess Sita (spouse of Lord Rama) resided in this very sanctuary during her exile period.
Flora
Vegetation cover: bamboo and dry deciduous forest cover.
Trees: Teak, Babool, Peepal, Salar, Bel, Arinja, Neem, Amla, Siras, Gulmohar, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: flying squirrel.
Other species: leopard, chousingha, porcupine, bear, neelgai, jackal, wild boar, pangolin, caracal, etc.
Avian Fauna
Indian darter, white eyed buzzard, Parah kite, white scavenger vulture, quail, spoonbill, cattle egret, Red turtle dove, etc.
Black-necked monarch and white-throated ground thrush are two new species of avian fauna that were recently discovered in the Sita Mata sanctuary.
Getting there
Dabok Airport at Udaipur is the closest airport to Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary, about 145 km away. Jaipur airport is another nearby aerodrome.
The closest bus terminal is at Pratapgarh which is well connected through regular bus services with Gujarat, Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
The nearest railheads to the sanctuary are located at Chittorgarh (about 110 km) and at Mandsaur (about 28 km) in Madhya Pradesh.
Tourist Information
Arampura Forest Guest House, situated inside the sanctuary, offers quality accommodation facilities to the visitors. Tourists can opt to stay at hotels, resorts and guest houses in Udaipur.
Entry permit can be secured from the Forest Ranger for entering the sanctuary.
