SOHAGI BARWA SANCTUARY

Established in the year 1987,
Sohagi Barwa Sanctuary is one of the important habitats of tigers in Uttar Pradesh. The sanctuary area is categorized into seven zones and is listed as Priority 3 grassland.

Flora
Forest type: Tropical Moist Deciduous forest and grasslands
Trees: Sal, Jaamun, Semal, Khair and Gutal.

Fauna
Flagship species: Tiger
Other species: Leopard, Cheetal, Alligator, Crocodile, Bison, Python, Porcupine, Small Indian civet, etc.

Avian Fauna
Black Necked Stork (endangered), Bengal Florican, Swamp Francolin, Ducks, Kankar, Vulture, Patha, Pond Heron, Pied King Fisher and others.

Getting there
The nearest airport and chief transport centre to Sohagi Barwa Sanctuary is at Gorakhpur (approximately 62km). The closest railway station is about 30km away at Anand Nagar. Tourist Information
Rest houses within the sanctuary are available for staying against prior reservation with the Divisional Office at Maharajganj. Besides, different lodges, guest houses and hotels near the sanctuary are also available for staying.
Different lakes and ponds in Sonari and Nagwa block are ideal venues to spot different rare and colourful birds. Singhrana Tal is the most popular water body in the sanctuary. Provisions of Wildlife Act are duly applicable to all the tourists and visitors to the forest reserve. Cooking, smoking and lighting of fire within the sanctuary are strictly prohibited, except in the canteen and rest houses. Alcoholic drinks and non-vegetarian food are not allowed in the forest. Safaris, bird spotting and trekking are popular activities here. Vishwanath Temple, Vishnupad Temple, Gaya, Bharat Kala Bhavan, Palamu Fort, etc are popular tourist spots around the sanctuary.
