Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary
Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Assam, along the lower elevations of the Himalayan
ranges. It was established in the year 1934. The Burhidihing River flows through the sanctuary.

Flora
Primarily evergreen forests with patches of grasslands.
Fauna
Major attraction: Elephant and Indian Bison.
Other species: Tiger, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Lesser Cats, Wild Boar, Gaur, Python, Russel’s viper
and so on.
Avian Fauna
Endangered species: White winged wood duck.
Other birds: Minivet, Pelican, Black headed Oriole, Horn bill, Horned Owl, Indian Roller, Nightjar,
Woodpecker, Hill Myna, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport is at Salonibari (Tezpur), approximately 45km away. The nearest railway station is
at Rangapara, which is located about 60km away from Bhalukpong. Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary
is connected through well developed road networks with Tezpur (52km), Dhekiajuli (30km),
Guwahati (193 km) and other parts of Assam.
Tourist Information
Quality staying options are available at the Forest Inspection Bungalow at Tezpur. Other than this,
there are different budget lodges and hotels located at Tezpur.
There are around ten camps within the sanctuary which include camps like Gelgeli, 24km, Jiabari,
Kamengbari, Kherbari, Gabharumukh, Gadhajuli, Serpa beel and the Sambari.
For any information or any arrangement, the visitors can contact the Divisional Forest Officer,
stationed at Tezpur. Trekking, wildlife spotting and wildlife photography are major tourist activities
here. It is always advisable for the tourists to wear khaki or green coloured clothes that easily
camouflage with the forest environment. Keep safe distance from the wild animals.
