SUKHNA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Chandigarh along the Raipur-Deobhog Highway. It adjoins
the catchment area of the famous man-made Sukhna Lake. It is one of the important habitats for the
sambar deer in the country.

Forest type: evergreen forest
Tree species: Shisham, Kikar, Phulai, Khair, Amla, Neem, Musket, Kari patta, Ber, Kendu, etc.
Fauna
Flagship Species: Sambar deer
Other species: Leopard, Spotted Deer, Common Monitor, Rhesus Monkey, Pangolin, Small Indian Civet, Turtle, Cobra, Indian Python, Common Krait, etc.
Avian Fauna
Red jungle fowl, Hoopoes, Barbets, Golden Oriole, Black drongo, Jacanas, Tree pie, Plovers, etc.
Getting there
The nearest railhead is at Dhamtari located on Raipur-Dhamtari Narrow Gauge. By road Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is easily approachable from different parts of Chandigarh through Raipur- Deobhog State Highway. Raipur Airport (about 170km) and Chandigarh Airport are the closet airports.
Tourist Information
There are no accommodation facilities within the sanctuary. The visitors can find staying options in the nearby towns and villages.
Prior permission has to be obtained from the Chandigarh forest department for entering the sanctuary. Maximum of 200 visitors are allowed in the sanctuary in a day. Hence, the entry permits are issued on first come first serve basis. The entry permits are non-transferable. Special permission is required for trekking inside the forest reserve. Visitors are prohibited from using the Nepli Inspection Hut/ Kansal Log hut. Campfire, cooking, flash photography, honking and gathering in large group inside the sanctuary are not permitted.
The water bodies inside the sanctuary are the ideal spot to view the wildlife. Yachting and boating is allowed on the Sukhna Lake.
