TADOBA NATIONAL PARK – Maharashtra

Located in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, Tadoba National Park is the oldest national park of the state. It is spread over an area of about 116.55 sq km.

About the park
The park derives its name from Taru, a local deity, who according to the mythological belief died during an encounter with a tiger. The park was established in the year 1955. It is also referred to as ‘Jewel of Vidharba’ by the locals.

Flora
The prominent flora species of the region include Teak, Salai, Karaya Gum, Axlewood, Black plum, Flame of the Forest, Dhauda, Bamboo, etc.

Fauna
Tiger, Indian leopards, Marsh Crocodile, Common Indian monitor, nilgai, spotted deer, sloth bears, etc. comprises the fauna world of the park.

Avian Fauna
Orange-headed Thrush, Grey-headed fish eagle, Indian Pitta, Paradise Flycatcher, Bronze- winged Jacana, etc. are endemic bird species that inhabit the park.

Tourist information
Several lodges operated by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation are available for lodging in and around the park. However, it is advisable for the tourists to carry their own water and food inside the park.
The most popular attraction of the Tadoba National Park is its jungle safari excursion. Safari rides with open top buses or Gypsy vehicles enable visitors to view wildlife more closely. Kolara, Navegaon and Khutwanda are three gateways to the park. Kolara and Navegaon can be best accessed from Nagpur. Khutwanda can be best accessed from Mohali and Warora.
The number of safari and the accommodation facilities in the reserve are limited. So the tourists should plan their travel in advance to get the required reservations.

Getting there
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport at Nagpur (almost 140 km away) is the adjacent airport. The closest railhead is at Chandrapur almost 45 km away. The nearby bus terminals are at Chimur (32 km) and at Chandrapur.
