TIRTHAN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the beautiful wildlife sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh. It is
located in the Kullu’s Serai Forest Division. This protected reserve is contiguous with the Great
Himalayan National Park towards its southern end. Except the western side, the sanctuary is
hemmed in by mountain ridges on all the other three sides.

Forest types: Moist Deodar Forest, Ban Oak Forest, Western Mixed Coniferous forest, Kharsu Oak
Forest Moist Temperate Deciduous Forest and alpine pasture.
Trees: Alpine, Ban Oak, Deodar, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Himalayan Tahr.
Snow Leopard, Barking Deer, Jungle Cat, Himalayan Brown Bear, Weasel, Brown Bear, Himalayan
Rhesus Macaque, etc.
Avian Fauna
Cheer Pheasant, Western Tragopan, Koklass Pheasant, Red Jungle fowl, Impeyan Monal and many
more.
Getting there
Kullu airport is the closest airport to Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary, located about 67km away. Shimla
train station junction, about 81km away, is the nearest railhead. Tourists can get a number of buses
and cabs from Kullu to reach the Tirthan sanctuary.

One can find different staying options around the sanctuary. Better quality accommodation options
are available at Kullu.
Tourists visiting the Tirthan sanctuary are requested to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of
the wildlife sanctuary and not disturb the calmness and serenity of the forest in any manner. Always
carry a powerful binocular to clearly view the wildlife from a distance. There are many hot springs
located within the sanctuary at Hans Kund, Khirganga and Mantalai Rakti Sar.
