Unique identity card for all Indians?

Even though India is regarded as a developing country, it is actually one of the most progressive countries in the world. Once known as the ‘Land of snake charmers’, this country has, in recent years, undergone a rapid metamorphosis. Today, India is one of the technologically advanced countries of the world. There is no denying the fact that we are a little slow, but then, we cannot forget the proverb, ‘Slow and steady wins the race’.

For good or bad India has always been the topic of global discussion, but unlike other countries we talk about our weaknesses and our government is always dedicated to eliminating those weaknesses. One of the greatest drawbacks of our country, perhaps, is its poverty level. Fraud, terrorism and illegal immigration are the cornerstones of poverty. Infiltration of people from other countries keeps increasing the population of the country. As a result, the jobs that need to be given to the native citizens are often illegally grabbed by these immigrants, who in turn do not even contribute to the government. This is where a unique identification card can prove very handy for the Indian government. A unique identification card will be able to control such unfair acts as it reinstates a person’s entitlement to serving in the government sector.

When it comes to ID systems, the Aadhaar initiative of India has set a high benchmark for the rest of the world. Aadhaar is a state-of-the-art online system that offers unique 12-digit ID numbers to all the Indian citizens. These numbers can be used for an array of public and private services. On 24 th April, 2020, the President of the World Bank Group, Mr. Jim Yong Kim had remarked that India’s initiative to launch the ‘Aadhaar card’ as a document of unique identity was probably the greatest poverty killer app the world has ever seen. In fact, he had also requested the then Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, of sharing this same thing with the other countries, especially Africa.

It was the intention of the then Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India to provide an identity to every single person of the 1.2 billion population of India, so as to enable social inclusion. This would in turn make the government more effective and reduce the class difference to a great extent as well. Having an identification of this stature would help the government know about its people, who belong to which category and accordingly decide how much help needs to be provided. This may prove to be a boon with regard to social welfare activities. A lot of people, owing to absence of recognition of existence in the country have been deprived of any help from the government. To abdicate this cause the ‘Aadhar card’ was to become a confirmed way of reaching out to these masses.

Additionally, developing a string identification card that contains all the details of the individuals, including their biometric prints, will help in the recognition of the individuals by the banks and allow them to hold accounts. This is known as financial inclusion. Even the people of the humbler class will have access to saving whatever little they can and avail the various financial schemes issued by the government.

The Public Distribution System, which includes the ration card system, will be handled efficiently when a document of unique identity comes into play. It is believed, a substantial number of people have more than one ration card to illegally avail different government benefits. This is why the existence of such a unique identification card becomes all the more imperative as it would help the government to eliminate the bogus ration cards (ration cards belonging to fictitious individuals). Through this card the leakages in the present system could be sealed.

To conclude, it can be said that in order to uphold India as a country whose people matter more than its system, the inclusion of such unique identification is a must. The glaring vice of corruption can be handled to a considerable extent if this kind of recognition document is rightly implemented and executed. Moreover whenever the government wants to distribute any cash, it can be done without any glitches.
