USHAKOTHI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the state of Odisha, about 22 km away from Sambalpur.
The sanctuary was established in 1962 and is also referred to as Badrama Sanctuary. Ushakothi
sanctuary is situated to the west of the Hirakud Dam.
Flora
Vegetation cover: dry deciduous forest type.
Major tree species: sal, sandalwood, casuarinas, neem, arjun, acacia, etc
Fauna
Flagship species: Wild Asian elephants and Royal Bengal Tigers.
Other species: tigers, sambal, elephants, nilgai, leopards, chital, wolves, bison and bears.
Getting there
Sambalpur railway station is the closest railway terminal to Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary. Biju
Patnaik International airport, about 300 km away, and Raipur airport, about 270 km away, are the
nearest airports. The sanctuary is nested on the NH6 and can be easily approached from Sambalpur
by availing bus or taxi services.
Tourist Information
Tourists can find quality accommodation at a two roomed forest rest house located within the
sanctuary with prior booking with the Divisional Forest Officer of sanctuary. Alternatively one can
find accommodation at the Forest Rest House at Badrama, about 3 km away from the sanctuary.
Bird watching, jeep safari and nature trail are popular tourist past time in the sanctuary. Tourists can
hire jeeps from the forest authorities or take their own private or hired vehicles into the reserve.
Petrol or diesel vehicles that are more than five years old are not allowed to enter inside the
sanctuary.
Two watch towers are erected within the sanctuary near the watering points. These towers enable
the visitors to get a panoramic view of the reserve. One can also arrange for spot lights and guides at
nominal rate from the forest officials. The best time to sight the sloth bears is at dusk, when they
come to drink water from the reservoirs within the reserve. Prior permission is required from the
forest authorities for entering Ushakothi Sanctuary. Photography is prohibited inside the sanctuary.
