VALMIKI NATIONAL PARK – Bihar

Valmiki National Park is situated in Bihar‘s west Champaran district in the neighbourhood of the Indo-Nepal border. It is spread over an area of about 335 km.

About the park
It was declared a national park in 1989 by the Government of Bihar. The park is named after Valmiki Nagar, a small town situated within the forest region. The park along with the adjoining Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary forms the Valmiki Tiger Reserve.

Flora
Tropical seasonal swamp forests, cane forests, moist mixed deciduous forests, dry and moist sal bearing forests, wet grasslands are the prominent vegetation cover of the region. Siwalik sal, sichharum, teak, jamun, beads, etc. are the prominent tree species here.

Fauna
Tiger, sloth bear, black buck, Indian bison, one-horned rhinoceros, king cobra, leopards, nilgai, hog deer, python, crocodiles, otters, etc. are the important animal species here.

Avian Fauna
Three-toed quail, pitta, Nepal kaleej pheasant, snipes, ibises, emerald dove, green pigeons, wood pigeon, etc. constitute the bird species of the park.

Getting there
The closest railway station to Valmiki National Park is located at Valmiki Nagar, almost 5 km away. The nearest aerodrome is at Patna (about 295 km away). The adjoining bus terminal is at Bettiah (approximately 80 km away).

Travel information
Rest houses maintained by the Irrigation Department inside the reserve can be availed for accommodation. More lodging options are available on NH- 64 and at Gandhi Nagar.
Safari rides (elephant, jeep and bullock cart) are the popular activities within the park. It is advisable to carry binoculars to have a better view of the wildlife during the safari rides. It is advised to remain silent during the rides, otherwise one will distract the animals and skip the chance of viewing them.
Valmiki Nagar is the only entrance to the park. Valmiki Ashram located in the vicinity of the Valmiki Nagar is an important nearby tourist spot. According to one mythological belief, the epic of Ramayana was written in this ashram by sage Valmiki.
