BARSEY RHODODENDRON SANCTUARY
Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is located in Sikkim along the Singalila Range which forms a natural boundary with Nepal. It is separated from West Bengal in the south by the Rambong Khola. The sanctuary is also referred to as Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary
Notification: Wildlife Sanctuary in 1988.
Flora
Forest type: sub-alpine forest, wet temperate forest, subtropical moist deciduous forest, alpine meadows and moist temperate forest.
Rhododendron species: campanulatum hodgsoni, arboreum, falconeri, cinnabarinum, betula utilis, Prunus rufa, acer caudatum, etc.
Other species: Magnolia, Primula, Pine, Bamboo, Oak and shrubs.
Fauna
Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda. Himalayan Yellow Throated Marten, Assamese Macaque, Serow, Himalayan Langur, Cannidae Wild dog, Leopard, etc.
Avian Fauna
Kaleej Pheasant, Monal Pheasant, Crimson Horned Pheasant, etc.
Getting there
Nearest airport to Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is at Bagdogra. New Jalpaiguri railway station is the closest railhead. Nearest major transport centre is at Geyzing. From Geyzing, one can approach Varsey Sanctuary via Hilley, Dentam or Soreng. One has to trek 3-4km from Hilley to reach the trekkers’ hut.
Tourist Information
Accommodation is possible in a Trekkers’ Hut or a hotel at Varsey at an elevation of about 10,000ft. A budget dormitory with bedding facilities is also available for accommodation.
The Varsey / Barsey sanctuary can be accessed from three points, Dentam, Soreng and Hilley. Hilley is the easiest and popular entrance point. Jungle safaris and trekking are major tourist recreation activities in the forest. Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is a trekker’s delight.
Littering is prohibited inside the forest reserve and the visitors are advised to bring back all their litter. Avoid using flash photography so that you do not disturb the wildlife.
