WAYANAD WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is situated in Kerala adjacent to Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka. It also encircles the Kurichiat Ranges and Sulthan Bathery within it. It comprises of two discontinuous pockets – Tholpetty (towards north) and Muthanga (towards south). Established in 1973, the sanctuary used to be a secret shelter of Pazhassi Raja during his fight against the British Empire.

Flora
Forest type: Southern arid mixed deciduous forests, south Indian wet mixed deciduous forest, west coast tropical semi-evergreen forest, bamboo brakes, shrubs and creepers. Major species: teak, rosewood, axle wood, Kadukka, silver oak, eucalyptus, whiteweed and nicker bean.

Fauna
Flagship species: Elephants.
Other species: tiger, deer, panther, Malabar squirrel, the rare slender loris, pit vipers, golden tree snake, termite hill gecko, flap shell turtles, crocodiles, flying lizard, etc.

Avian Fauna
Malabar whistling thrush, painted bush quail, golden oriole, golden-backed three-toed wood pecker, crested honey buzzard, pariah kite, the rare blue bearded bee-eater, etc.

How to get there
Nearest railway terminals to Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is at about 110 km away, at Kozhikode. Calicut International Airport is the closest airport.

Tourist Information
The tourists can find dormitory and eco-huts at Muthanga. Forest rest house at Chethalayam also provides comfortable staying options.

Tholpetty and Muthanga are the two ecotourism centres in the sanctuary. Natural trail, trekking and wildlife safari rides are prime tourist activities here. Karottimala (about 3800 ft above msl) is the highest peak in the region. Prior entry permit is required to enter the sanctuary. The tourists are restricted to the sanctuary’s outer zone only. Only the warden and the researchers are allowed to enter the sanctuary’s inner zone which is nearly 25 km wide.
