Yoga

Yoga is a 5000 year old form of exercise that originated in India. It was developed by the yogis, thousands of years ago by observing the movements of various animals in the jungle. This form of exercise is more than a mere turning, stretching and twisting of body. It is the union of the soul or individual consciousness with the Universal Spirit.

Benefits of this form of exercise are manifoild. The different postures, asanas and breathing techniques of this scientific form of exercise are designed to strenghtened and relax one’s body, mind and spirit. This form of exercise perfects one’s posture, improves muscle and bone strength, fortifies one’s immunity system, and increases flexibility of the joints, tendons and ligaments. It also regulates the blood flow, adrenal glands, temperature and sugar level of the body.

Besides the physical benefits, the pshycological benefits of this form of exercise are also immense. This exercise is similar to a practical philosophy which develops self awareness and self-discipline within us. It helps us to develop our inner peace and maintain the harmony with various elements around us.

People who have been regularly practising yoga have witnessed an overall improvement in their concentration level, stamina, self control and inner peace. It enables them to overcome many of their sicknesses and physical disabilities without depending on medicine. Several businessmen and celebrities who are leading a hectic and stressful lifestyle have started practising yoga to relax their body and mind.

The best thing about this Indian form of exercise is that it can be practised by people of any age. Further, this free hand exercise does not require any equipment and can be practised at any place. All you need is a mat to get started. However, the beginners need to practise it under the supervision of a trained person to avoid any accident or injury. There are many professional institutions that teach this art of exercise. Nowdays it is also taught in many schools and colleges as co-curricular activity.

To create awarness about this ancient form of exercise, Shri Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Minister, in one of his UN addresses had proposed to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to declare 21 st of June as an International Yoga Day, so that every individual around the world could be benefited from it. Accordingly, on 11 th December, 2014, United Nations General Assembly declared 21 st of June as “International Yoga Day”. As Indian it was a very proud moment for us to see one of our Indian concepts being practised by people worldwide.
